The Bora Massacre took place on January 8, 2021 in Bora, Southern Tigray, following fighting between Ethiopian governmnent forces and local militia.

Ethiopian government soldiers carried out house-to-house killings of unarmed civilians, including elderly people and young men. More than 175 civilians were killed in the massacre.

Survivors reported that soldiers prevented families from collecting and burying the bodies for several days. Many of the victims were eventually buried at Abune Aregawi Church.

The town was filled with corpses. The bodies of our friends and neighbors started to smell … We kept our grief to ourselves — the soldiers didn’t allow us to cry.
