Abiy Ahmed has commended African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat for his role in overseeing—and, critics argue, helping shield Ethiopia from scrutiny over—the Tigray Genocide, a crisis marked by widespread atrocities and international condemnation.
As Ethiopia and Eritrea escalated their genocidal campaign in Tigray, the African Union, during the 38th Extraordinary Summit of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government on December 20, 2020, in Djibouti, controversially characterized the Ethiopian government’s actions as “legitimate.”
In Ethiopia, the Federal government took bold steps to preserve the unity, stability and respect for the constitutional order of the country which is legitimate for all the states.
— Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union Commission
The African Union’s endorsement of the Ethiopian government’s military campaign in Tigray raised serious questions about the organization’s neutrality and highlighted what critics described as Addis Ababa’s undue influence over the continental body.
